AFRIWAG Joins the National Forum for Older Persons in Ruvuma

AFRIWAG (African Women AIDS Working Group) joined the Government of Tanzania and other development partners in the National Forum for Older Persons ahead of the International Day of Older Persons. The forum took place at the Chandamali Hall in Songea Municipality, Ruvuma Region.

The forum was held under the theme:
“Older Persons’ Participation in Elections for Peace and the Well-being of Our Society.”

Purpose of the Forum

During the forum, older persons had the opportunity to present and discuss:

  • Challenges they face in their daily lives.
  • Achievements made in strengthening services and respect for older persons.
  • Steps being taken by the Government, stakeholders, and communities to improve the quality of life for older persons in Tanzania.

AFRIWAG’s Contribution

As a committed partner in social development, AFRIWAG actively participated by:

  • Exploring better ways to ensure older persons are fully included in national development.
  • Advocating for improved access to quality health services.
  • Highlighting the importance of social protection and economic opportunities for older persons.

Older persons are a national treasure. Their participation in social, political, and economic matters is essential for peace, solidarity, and sustainable development. This year’s theme emphasizes the need to ensure that older persons are not left behind but are fully engaged in elections and in shaping the future of the nation.
