AFRIWAG Participates in World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026 in Kagera Region
On 15 June 2026, AFRIWAG (African Women AIDS Working Group) proudly participated in the National Commemoration of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) held in Kagera Region, Tanzania.
The event brought together government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, councils of older persons, and community members to raise awareness about the prevention and elimination of all forms of abuse, neglect, discrimination, and violence against older persons.
This year’s theme, “Prevent Elder Abuse: It Is Everyone’s Responsibility,” emphasized the collective duty of families, communities, institutions, and policymakers to protect the dignity, rights, safety, and well-being of older persons.
As an organization committed to promoting the rights and welfare of vulnerable populations, AFRIWAG recognizes the invaluable contribution that older persons make to society. Their wisdom, experience, and knowledge are essential assets for sustainable community development and intergenerational learning.
Through its programs and partnerships, AFRIWAG continues to work closely with the Government of Tanzania, Older Persons’ Councils, local communities, and development partners to advocate for the rights of older persons and ensure they have access to quality services, protection, and opportunities that enable them to live dignified and secure lives.
The commemoration served as an important platform for dialogue, awareness creation, and collective action toward addressing challenges faced by older persons, including abuse, neglect, social exclusion, and barriers to accessing essential services.
AFRIWAG extends its sincere appreciation to HelpAge Tanzania, HelpAge International, HelpAge Deutschland, Irish Aid, and BMZ for their continued partnership and support in advancing the rights, protection, and well-being of older persons in Tanzania. Their contribution remains instrumental in strengthening efforts to create an inclusive society where older persons are respected, valued, and protected.
As we commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026, AFRIWAG reaffirms its commitment to promoting healthy and active ageing, safeguarding the rights of older persons, and working with stakeholders to build communities free from abuse, discrimination, and neglect.
Together, we can create a society that respects, protects, and values older persons.
